What to look for — five criteria.
Apply these five criteria to any machine you are considering.
1.PEM/SPE electrolysis — not alkaline
The electrolysis technology determines gas purity, safety and maintenance requirements. PEM/SPE — Proton Exchange Membrane / Solid Polymer Electrolyte — is the correct technology for a daily-use consumer inhaler. It produces separated gas streams and hydrogen without corrosive chemicals. Alkaline electrolysis using lye electrolytes is an industrial production method — not appropriate for a device you breathe from daily. Confirm the electrolysis method before purchasing.
2.Published purity — H₂; see model documentation
hydrogen at the hydrogen outlet is the standard a correctly engineered PEM/SPE machine achieves. This figure should appear on the specification sheet. If a seller does not publish a purity figure, request it in writing before purchasing.
3.CE certification — the UK baseline
CE marking confirms the machine meets EU safety, electromagnetic compatibility and environmental protection standards. Post-Brexit, CE marking remains widely accepted for goods imported into Great Britain under current UKCA transitional arrangements — it is the credible international baseline for an electronic wellness device sold into the UK market. 4.Certified flow rate — ml/min
Flow rate determines how much hydrogen is delivered per session. It should be a certified figure in ml/min — not a marketing estimate. Always confirm whether the quoted figure is pure H₂ output or combined H₂+O₂ total output. In a correctly separated 2:1 system, pure H₂ is always two-thirds of the combined total.
5.UK support and MHRA position
Confirm the seller can support UK buyers directly — warranty claims, returns and pre-purchase questions. Also confirm the machine is marketed correctly as a general wellness device — not as a medical device requiring MHRA licensing. Hydrogen inhalation is not currently licensed as a medical treatment by the MHRA. A seller making clinical or medical claims about a hydrogen inhaler in the UK market is operating outside the regulatory framework for general wellness devices.

The UK market for hydrogen inhalers in 2026 is smaller and less fragmented than the US market — a handful of international sellers shipping to the UK, one or two UK-registered wellness retailers, and an increasing number of Amazon.co.uk marketplace listings.
The main categories:
International direct-price suppliers — factory-direct importers with published certification documentation and direct customer support shipping free to the UK with import duties payable on arrival (DAP). Hydrogen Machines operates in this category.
UK and European wellness retailers — a small number of UK-registered or EU-based wellness equipment retailers stocking hydrogen inhalers at retail margin. AlkaWay operates primarily in Australia but ships to the UK; some European wellness brands serve the UK market post-Brexit.
Amazon.co.uk marketplace — a growing channel with variable quality. Certification documentation is frequently absent or unverifiable. Apply the five criteria above to any Amazon listing before purchasing.
Post-Brexit consideration: goods imported into Great Britain from outside the UK are subject to UK import duties and VAT. UK orders ship DAP; import duties and VAT are payable by the customer on arrival. Confirm duty status with any seller before purchasing.
